Booking a GP appointment
When you visit your GP, you can confirm all the NHS funding criteria and whether your situation aligns with it. You may also want to ask questions like:
- How long does it take to refer me to a specialist?
In some regions, it takes more than six months to start IVF treatment with the NHS. It can take longer due to COVID.
- What tests can be done at my GP surgery before seeing a specialist?
Most GP surgeries can arrange blood tests – but semen analysis and scans will have to be arranged separately either with a local fertility clinic or hospital.
- Can I switch from private to NHS-funded treatment?
Some patients find NHS waiting times too long and decide to have the first cycle with a private clinic while they’re waiting. If they have a failed cycle and would like to try to return to NHS treatment, they may no longer qualify. Again, it is worth confirming with your GP.
- Can I use a sperm donor?
If you’re a single woman and you’re looking for a sperm donor, you need to check with your GP if the NHS will fund this.
